Purpose

To help students become independent musical performers by…

developing students’ technical skills on their instrument
developing students’ listening, analytical and teamwork skills in ensemble performance.
building students’ vocabulary in musical terminology and theory.
improving students’ understanding of a variety of musical styles through listening, discussion,
analysis and performance.

To improve students’ ability to connect intellectual and emotional though processes through high-quality musical performance.

To allow each student meaningful opportunities for self-expression through musical performance.

To enable students to become educated and discriminating consumers of music.

To build individual character, esteem and teamwork through group accomplishment.

The curriculum is circular in nature. There is similarity from year to year, but comprehensive

development in the areas shown above requires four years of study.

This handbook is your guide to success as a member of the FVHS Band Program and should be kept as a reference. It contains the operating rules, schedules, grading system and goals of the program. Many questions you may have about the operation of the group will be answered here.
Note that some information applies only to specific courses, such as Marching Band or Wind Ensemble.
